香港の民主派デモのニュースで耳にした “take a stand” の意味とは？
香港でのデモが勢いを拡大し続けています。現状を理解するために、いつものごとく香港の歴史をふりかえっていたところ、NBC News の動画でナレーターがこう言っていました。
Tensions today are already high and in the face of significant repression and uncertainty the people of Hong Kong are taking a stand.（3:18）
“take a stand” は「立場を明確にする」という意味です。
take a stand:[idiomatic) To assert an opinion or viewpoint; to defend one’s point of view or beliefs
（意見や観点を強く主張する、あるいは見解や信念を守る、という意味なんですね。）
つまり動画のナレーターは、こう語っていたのでした！
